This past weekend at Chicagoland Speedway was a perfect example of how the chase means absolutely nothing to the 27 other drivers in the field. The only thing they have to prove but getting a win for their team. It didn’t take Jamie McMurray long to show that he had a car that was going to contend for the win on Sunday. Starting 11th, McMurray drove through the field and took the lead on lap 40. He was letting it all hang out driving as high around the track as you can go without hitting the wall. This was fine up until he ran out of real estate and eventually did end up in the wall. The car was still fast and carried McMurray to a 9th place finish.
Then there was Kyle Larson. He had a solid top ten car all day and the team just kept working on it and making it better allowing him to take the lead for Kevin Harvick on lap 228. In the closing stages he didn’t think twice about mixing it up with the chasers in an effort to get to victory lane. He took part in a wild battle with Kevin Harvick for the lead and then for 2nd place after Brad Keselowski split the two cars coming out of turn two and ran off with the win.
The drivers involved in the chase are going to be the story throughout the rest of the season. However, all of the other drivers still have something to prove as we saw at Chicagoland. This will give everyone something else to watch for as the chase rolls on.
